First Principal Meridian
Monroeville, IN

 

The First Principal Meridian falls on the Van Wert and Paulding County Lines for Ohio, being a road intersection to the North-East-South and a field to the West.  The road is asphalt running North and South and is gravel to the East. the Meridian runs along the Ohio Indiana Border.
There is a house in the Northeast quadrant and in the Southeast quadrant there is an iron post with brass cap set in 1911 by the United States Geological Survey.
This corner was originally set in 1819 by Sylvanus Bourne.

It is thought that the original marker or an early replacement of it lies underneath this intersection. Today there is no visible sign of it or any historical marker.
